Random Wedding Photographer Questions Answered

Planning a wedding comes with a lot of questions—especially when it comes to photography. As a seasoned wedding photographer in Tampa Bay, I hear many of the same questions from couples who are newly engaged. To make things easier, I’ve gathered a few of the most common questions (and honest answers) to help you feel more confident as you plan your big day. Below are common wedding photographer questions couples often have!

What are RAW photos?

RAW photos are unedited image files straight from the camera. They’re large, unprocessed, and not ready for printing or sharing. Think of them like the ingredients of a meal or dessert—before a chef adds spices, mixes them together or presents them on a plate. When photographers edit your images, they bring out the colors, lighting, and details to match their style. That’s why couples receive edited images, not RAW files—they’re polished and refined to a style unique to the photographer.

Why are wedding photographers so expensive?

Wedding photography is more than just showing up with a camera. Behind the scenes, photographers spend time planning timelines, shooting for 8–10+ hours, editing thousands of photos, investing in gear, software, insurance, and training. Your photographer is also responsible for preserving memories that will last for generations. It’s not just a product—it’s an experience and a legacy.

Do you tip a photographer at a wedding?

Tips are never required, but always appreciated! Many couples choose to tip about 5–10% of the photography package if they feel their photographer went above and beyond. Put planners or a trusted family member in charge of giving this tip if it is in cash to the photographer on the wedding day. It’s one less thing to worry about if it is planned out in advance. If you don’t tip, a heartfelt thank-you note or review online is just as meaningful.

Are you supposed to feed your wedding photographer?

Yes, if your photographer is working during dinner, it’s thoughtful to provide them with a meal. Photographers are usually on their feet for 8+ hours. Feeding them helps them recharge so they can keep capturing the rest of your night. Most couples include vendors like photographers, DJs, and planners in their catering headcount. If time allows, some vendors may leave to get a meal and come back, but this may lead to missing key moments. If possible, it is best to have them included in the headcount so the timeline doesn’t lag behind.

Can you negotiate wedding photographer prices?

Every photographer runs their business differently, but most have packages built to reflect their time, skill, and expenses. While heavy negotiating isn’t common, many photographers are happy to adjust coverage hours or offer flexible payment plans to help couples stay on budget. It’s always okay to ask respectfully if there’s flexibility.

Do you send a wedding invitation to your photographer?

You don’t have to send your photographer a formal wedding invitation unless you want to. Once you’ve booked, your photographer already has the details. That said, some couples love sending invitations to their vendor team as keepsakes—it’s a nice personal touch.

Does the photographer count as a wedding guest?

Photographers aren’t usually counted as guests since they’re there to work, not celebrate as an attendee. But remember—they’ll be by your side all day. Many couples say their photographer feels like an honorary guest by the end of the night because of the bond they’ve built.

Final Thoughts

These questions come up often, and the answers can help you feel more prepared when planning your wedding. The most important thing? Choose a photographer you trust—someone who not only captures your wedding but makes you feel comfortable and listens to your concerns along the way.
